MARGARETE
BAGSHAW was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964. She is
the daughter of artist Helen Hardin and granddaughter of
artist Pablita Velarde. Together, they form one of the only
three generational female painting dynasties known. Their
work is now shown together exclusively and permanently at
Golden Dawn Gallery in Santa Fe. Margarete grew up in New
Mexico and lived most of her life between Albuquerque and
Santa Fe. While at the side of both her mother – Helen
Hardin and grandmother – Pablita Velarde, for most of her
life, Margarete did not start to create her own artwork
until 1991 when she first showed her work at the New Mexico
Arts and Crafts Fair. Her drawings started to gain notice
and she began entering her work in “blind” juried shows.
Soon she moved to pastels and in the late 1990’s, she began
working in oils. In 1995 Margarete began to show at Silver
Sun Gallery on Canyon Rd. in Santa Fe (also the home to the
“Helen Hardin Estate Gallery”). Margarete left Silver Sun
and began showing at Blue Rain Gallery, (Taos) in 1999. In
2003 Margarete was invited to show at Ventana Fine Art on
Canyon Rd. in Santa Fe.
In 2006, after settling her
grandmother’s estate, she moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Margarete lived in the Virgin Islands for almost 3 years
(2006 – 2009). While in the Virgin Islands, she was a
founding partner and co-builder of ISW Studios – a
world-class recording and multi-media studio in St. Thomas,
USVI. Margarete was responsible for all design elements of
the studio project during construction, and was in charge of
all administrative functions of all of the ISW family of
businesses. Through 2006, 2007 sand 2008, Margarete
continued to paint two- dimensional works that were shipped
back to her gallery in New Mexico. In 2009, Margarete
decided to return to clay work – something she had not done
since her school days – almost 25 years earlier. These clay
pieces are flat tablets as well as three-dimensional works
of clay – abstract, non-symmetrical bowls and vessels. These
clay pieces were all incised with the intricate designs that
Margarete is recognized for, and then after firing, painted
with oil paint. In August of 2009, Margarete opened her own
gallery featuring the work of herself, her mother and her
grand mother.
Throughout her 20-year career she has been known for her use
of color, composition and texture – with all of the mediums
she has worked in. Margarete has been featured in many
publications including but not limited to: “Santa Fean”
magazine, “Southwest Art” magazine, “Native Peoples”
magazine, and the “New Mexico Magazine”. Margarete has taken
part in over a dozen major museum exhibitions, including:
the Eiteljorge Museum Of American and Western Art in
Indianapolis, IN, the Wheelwright Museum, Santa Fe, NM, the
Hamden Museum in Virginia, and numerous invitational shows
with the Museum of Albuquerque, NM. In 1996, she gave a
personal slide presentation at the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum
of New Zealand. As the subject of a documentary film
project, Margarete spoke at the dedication ceremony for the
donation of “The White Collection” (featuring a number of
Margarete’s works), at the Lakeview Museum in Illinois in
September of 2008. In March of 2010, Margarete was invited
to present a “One Woman Show” at the SMOKI Museum in
Prescott, Arizona. Margarete is part of the “Vantage Point”
show at the Smithsonian N.M.A.I. in Washington DC, and she
was invited to lecture at the Smithsonian in March 2011 for
“Women In History Month.” After showing and painting in the
Virgin Islands for the last 3 years, she is now back at home
in New Mexico, and has opened Golden Dawn Gallery, named
after the English translation of her grandmother’s Tewa
Indian name - “Tse Tsan” (Golden Dawn).
Margarete now primarily paints two-dimensional works on
canvas and board panels, and her paintings are colorful
combinations of shape, texture, and light. Her work is an
expression of the spirituality that the creation of art is
all about for Margarete. The intricate and detailed multi-
compositional aspect of her images reveals the many layers
of thought that all of her work contains. From small works
to larger canvases – all include complex compositions that
hold their own individually throughout each painting and as
well as in a single complex composition as a whole.

As time goes by, artists
develop their talent and perfect their skills through their
creations. Many of the top artists that you see today
have exhibited their artwork in the New Mexico Arts & Crafts
Fair. Some of the finest New Mexico resident arts and crafts
artisans started their careers at the Fair. Out 50 Annual
Fairs have encouraged our artisans to grow and flourish
through the years.
Our 50 Art Fairs are
being celebrated with a "Treasures in Time" Keynote Exhibit.
This year, we selected over 50 past artisans to show one of
their early artworks as well as a current piece. It is
important to recognize their artwork through the years and
experience a display of their works.

View the next generation of New
Mexico artists! The Youth Exhibit is designed to encourage
students to become actively involved in the arts and has evolved
into a major show for students all over New Mexico. The Youth
Exhibit has grown from 200 entries to over 1000 entries.
Pre-school through high school are invited to participate.
Artwork is independently judged by highly
respected and successful New Mexico Artists.
All participants receive a participation
ribbon and our
Youth
Awards Program, generously
supported by our Artists and Community,
provides award ribbons and cash awards.
Elisa Patterson is our 2011 Youth
Director. She has spent countless volunteer hours
coordinating the Fair's Youth Exhibit. We would like
to recognize her efforts for keeping this exhibit of youth
arts alive in our fair this year.

MAUDE ANDRADE
explores creative expression through several different artistic
media. She grew up in a family of artists, and her mother, Jo Diggs,
exhibited in the NMACF in the 1960s and 1970s. After graduating from
the University of New Hampshire in 1987, Andrade achieved national
recognition as an award-winning textile and clothing designer with a
passion for surface design. Her work has been featured in Ornament,
Fiberarts, The Fiberarts Book of Wearable Design, The Surface Design
Journal, and American Style Magazine. As well as lecturing and
serving as a jury selection member for the NMACF and the Southwest
Arts Festival, she has exhibited at the prestigious Smithsonian
Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum Arts and Craft Show, Atelier,
the American Craft Council Shows, and the NMACF. Her mixed media
paintings have been included in exhibits at the Albuquerque Museum,
the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, Mariposa Gallery in
Albuquerque, Patina Gallery, Santa Fe, and internationally in Kuwait
City, Kuwait.
MICHAEL ORGEL
creates artwork that derives from a strong background in human
anatomy and lifelong study of organic form. While his sculpture is
not always suggestive of the human figure, it invariably has
anthropomorphic aspiration, and many of his sculptural ideas have
originated from objects found in nature to which he gives a human
quality. He uses stone to carve the long flowing curves with strong
edges and negative space, often characteristic of his work. Rough to
smooth finishing of the carved work is also an integral part of his
process, which allows him to give the final stone surface a glowing
luster that adds a tactile dimension and invites touching. Orgel has
twelve years of academic experience at the University of New Mexico
School of Medicine, which thoroughly shaped his twenty-five year
practice in plastic surgery. His interests in sculpture predated,
and proceeded concurrently with his medical practice, and these
parallel vocations benefited from a frequent cross-over of ideas,
and a long apprenticeship in sculptural aspects of the human body.
In 1996 he decided to devote his full energies to his sculpture
career.
LOUISE PERKINSON
has dedicated her artistic life to creating wearable objects of art.
She first became interested in the design and creation of jewelry as
a Fine Arts student at the University of New Mexico. She and her
husband, painter Tom Perkinson, both exhibited in the NMACF during
the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In the early 2000s, their daughter Sara
Rose also exhibited her paintings at the NMACF. Perkinson
passionately works with sterling silver, 18K yellow gold and gems.
She fabricates her jewelry by hand; it is uniquely contemporary but
often influenced by ethnic and native aesthetics, a direct result of
living in New Mexico. She has served as juror for the Southwest Arts
Festival, and has exhibited at the Millicent Rodgers Museum in Taos,
the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, the Albuquerque Museum, Magnifico!,
and at national juried craft shows in Baltimore, Dallas, St. Paul,
and Ann Arbor. She’s also exhibited her jewelry at galleries in
California, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, New York and Pennsylvania.
Her newest work can be seen at Mariposa Gallery, in Albuquerque, and
Palace Jewelers at Manitou Gallery, in Santa Fe.
VERA RUSSELL has
been drawing and painting all of her life. With encouragement from
her teachers she began exhibiting her work in the early seventies.
Since then, she has taken lessons and exhibited her work wherever
her Navy husband’s career took them. This included Hawaii,
California, Virginia, South Carolina, Scotland and Spain, so she has
collectors all over the world. When the family settled in
Albuquerque, she bought a ceramic business and taught classes. While
operating a gallery and the wholesale pottery business for several
years, she continued to take lessons, painted, and tried her hand at
stone sculpture. She paints predominantly in a realistic style in
oils and recently began using pastels. In both still life and
landscapes, she tries to capture the special moment when light
illuminates the New Mexico grass, or how the shadow gently follows a
curve around a pot or pitcher. In essence she tries to capture the
ordinary scenes in a special moment. She has a special affinity for
water, ocean, lakes, rivers, from all the years they lived on the
coasts. She has exhibited regularly at New Mexico Arts and Crafts
Fair, Masterworks, Encantada, Expo New Mexico, Amapola Gallery in
Old Town Albuquerque, Gabriel’s Gallery in Santa Fe and other local
shows.
CHRIS SPANOVICH
has supported herself as a self-taught, full-time clay artist since
1976. Spanovich's work can be found in several permanent collections
including the Arizona State University Art Museum, The Roswell Art
Museum, The Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and the Wustum Museum of
Arts in Racine, WI. She has also exhibited internationally in New
Zealand, Australia, and Japan and has been awarded five National
Endowment for the Arts "Artist-in-Schools" grants. She was assigned
to the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped in Alamogordo,
NM, where two of her projects included a one-and-a-half ton clay
mural and a playground designed for and with the residents.
Currently she is stretching into new realms of possibilities as she
enjoys combining various materials with clay to create mixed-media
work. She lives on a beautiful piece of land in the high desert
mountains of northern New Mexico. And by traveling to more countries
than she is years old, she gathers knowledge and inspiration with
each boarder crossing. She wants to use time well and be all that
she can in whatever years are left to her, as she strives to be
awake and to pay attention.

Again, in 2011, the fair
presented numerous Artist Demonstrations during the fair hours. These
were wonderful opportunities for patrons to observe, first hand, artists
at work and to view their technique.

We thank all of the 2010 volunteers
for their help with this year's Fair!
For 50 years, hundreds of
volunteers have played a special role at the New Mexico
Arts & Crafts Fair. They help operate the
Information, Raffles, and Sales Booth; act as gallery
assistants with the Youth Fair; and assist the artists
with hospitality and as booth-sitters. Without the
hard work of our volunteers, the Fair could not take
place. Volunteering is great fun!
Art, music, good friends ...
not a bad way to spend a weekend.
If you are interested in
volunteering for future Fairs or at the office, please
use the contact information below and let us know.

Director, and exhibited for many years at New Mexico Arts
and Crafts Fair.
Arthur J. Tatkoski,
Sculptor, was one of the Founders of the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair.
They will be missed
by all who knew and loved them.
